“When we reviewed the numerous applicants for this year’s grants, we were very impressed with many of the applicants and ultimately decided to select six charities as beneficiaries of this year’s Hoop-A-Paluza event,” said Ed Zimmerman, Chair of Hoop-A-Paluza, Inc. “The six beneficiaries provide a wide range of services for kids in New Jersey and New York and our grants will provide much needed funding for new infrastructure and very important programs.”
Hoop-A-Paluza VI is three-hour child-friendly fundraising event that includes a basketball foul shot contest and carnival style entertainment. Registered participants raise money by obtaining pledges from donors who sponsor them to shoot 20 free throws. Participants and their families will enjoy contests, music, crafts, inflatable rides and many other activities throughout the event.
About Our 2007 Beneficiaries:
Children’s Aid and Family Services www.cafsnj.org
Hoop-A-Paluza will provide an operating grant to help underwrite the cost of its Boarder Babies program. Boarder babies are babies born to parents unable or unwilling to care for them, so their parents are discharged from the hospital while the baby remains without a home. The funding will underwrite the support and medical training programs for these fragile infants and the families who take them into their homes.
Youth Consultation Services (YCS) www.ycs.org
YCS will participate in this year’s Hoop-A-Paluza event and will be awarded a $40,000 grant to fully fund a new outdoor play structure and level playing area at the YCS Holley Childcare and Development Center in Hackensack, New Jersey, a group home for 70 children ages 5-13, who through no fault of their own, have no other place to call home. The children at the Holley Center have suffered deeply and YCS helps them to heal – giving them the skills to overcome their troubling childhoods and develop their confidence and self worth.
Tomorrow’s Children Fund (TCF) www.atcfkid.com
Tomorrows Children's Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to easing the pain and speeding the healing of children with cancer, serious blood disorders and cancer survivors, will utilize the Hoop-A-Paluza grant to fund several programs. The grant will be utilized for the foundation's annual picnic which brings 1,000 people together for a day of fun - patients, their family members as well as the doctors and nurses who care for them.
Funding will also enable TCF to continue the newly established food pantry and food voucher program for inpatients and their families. Healthy snacks can supplement the three meals provided from the medical center and also provide meals and snacks for the parents of patients who must be admitted to the medical center for several days or weeks.
Hoop-A-Paluza will also provide funding for special trips for patients. Throughout the year, TCF provides short trips for patients as well as siblings who have lost a brother or sister to cancer or a serious blood disorder. Older patients join in the Winter Mountain Experience at Hunter Mountain, NY, where they can trade in their IV poles for ski poles and enjoy skiing, tubing and other fun winter sports. A kayak trip in the summer as well as camping trips and trips to area sporting events or shows are also enjoyed by our patients.
Do-Something www.dosomething.org/clubs
Do Something, the not-for-profit Internet company that inspires and activates young people to change the world, will utilize the $35,000 grant from Hoop-A-Paluza to fund and create the Do Something Clubs/Hoop-A-Paluza Youth to Youth grants contest. The Youth to Youth contest will award project grants to new and existing Do Something clubs who come up with the best community action projects that benefit disadvantaged youth in their communities.
Team Walker www.teamwalker.org
Team Walker, a charity started by ex-Seton Hall basketball star Jerry Walker, is dedicated to assisting under privileged children in Jersey City. Team Walker’s grant money will cover the full cost of sending 50 campers to Camp Conrad in Reading, PA. Most, if not all, of the kids have never experienced an outdoor healthy environment before.
Kids Corporation www.kidscorporation.org
Kids Corporation’s mission is to care for children living in Newark, New Jersey through programs and services that bolster academic skills, promote healthy development and stimulate a love of learning. Founded in 1971, Kids Corporation operates summer schools, after-schools, environmental education and healthcare programs in every ward of the City and provide books, clothing, medical exams and follow-up care, school supplies, eyeglasses and educational field trips to over 4,300 Newark children annually. “We are thrilled to be participating in Hoop-A-Paluza this year. It is a fun, creative way to gather our friends and supporters and raise money while having a great time!” says Kids Corportaion founder Michael Nolan. The grant from Hoop-A-Paluza is a restricted challenge grant based on Kids Corporation raising dollar for dollar matching funds. Kids Corporation will utilize the HAPI grant proceeds as part of a restricted fund to build the Kids Corporation endowment.
